Copilot for Power BI is now available in South Africa

Jan 19, 2024

Recently, Microsoft introduced the public preview of Copilot in Microsoft Fabric, showcasing Copilot for Power BI, Data Factory, and Data Science & Data Engineering. Since the initial preview release, Microsoft has been making these features available to all Power BI Premium/Fabric Capacity users.

Getting Started with Copilot

Users can now create reports faster and easier in the Power BI web experience. By entering a high-level prompt, Copilot for Power BI in Fabric can generate an entire report page for you by identifying the tables, fields, measures, and charts to help you get started. Users can then personalize their reports using existing editing tools.

Copilot goes beyond report creation helping users understand their semantic model and suggesting topics for report pages. This feature is particularly helpful for those less familiar with report creation in Power BI.

In addition to report creation, Copilot’s unique data summarization capability has been integrated into the Smart Narrative visual, now rebranded as the Narrative with Copilot visual. This visual summarizes data and insights within a page, across an entire report, or for a specific template. Helping users communicate insights about the data that matters most. The Narrative with Copilot visual is accessible in both the Power BI service and Power BI Desktop.

How to enable Copilot for your organization

To enable Copilot in Power BI for your business. Your administrator needs to enable Copilot in Microsoft Fabric through the admin portal’s new tenant setting group. “Copilot and Azure OpenAI Service (preview).”

The most recent update allows tenant admins to enable AI and Copilot specifically for security groups. Tailoring Copilot to the unique needs of different groups within a business. Additional refinements to AI and Copilot settings on the Capacity level are on the way.

Fabric Copilot is powered by Azure OpenAI large language models, currently deployed to limited data centres. As of January 2024, the Copilot preview will be disabled by default for data located in South Africa, unless your tenant administrator enables this through the tenant settings.
